WEAving the Worlds Fall 2009 Conference Call Series
Call 2: San Francisco Peaks: Legal Advocacy for Sacred Sites Protection

Featuring...
Jeneda Benally (Diné), Save the Peaks Coalition
Howard Shanker, Esq., Attorney for the Save the Peaks Coalition and principal, The Shanker Law Firm, PLC
Moderated by Caitlin Sislin, Esq., Advocacy Director for WEA's Women and Land Initiative Join us for a discussion of the Save the Peaks Coalition's just-filed lawsuit against the United States Forest Service, pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Callers will learn about the history of legal action in this case, what the Ninth Circuit's en banc decision means for sacred sites protection in the U.S., and the Coalition's allegations under NEPA.
Northern Arizona's majestic San Francisco Peaks are sacred to thirteen Native American tribes, and hold unparalleled cultural and environmental significance in the region. Operators of the Snowbowl Ski Resort on the Peaks propose to spray the ski area with artificial snow made of treated sewage effluent. Such an act would cause unprecedented desecration of these holy mountains, threatening the spiritual foundation of the tribes and interfering with cultural life ways. In response, members of the Save the Peaks Coalition sued the United States Forest Service on a variety of grounds. After litigating the issue twice in the Ninth Circuit, where an en banc panel overturned the favorable earlier decision of a three-judge panel, plaintiffs were denied certiorari from the United States Supreme Court. The call will last one hour and will be recorded for archival purposes.
Women's Earth Alliance certifies that this activity has been approved for 1.0 hour of MCLE credit by the State Bar of California. |
