Hello Wheatsville friends and fans!

Well, it looks like we might might be going plastic bag free a little earlier here at Wheatsville. As many of you know, March 1st is the official start date of the new bag ordinance in Austin which will eliminate most single use plastic bags from grocers and retail shops. BUT, we just checked our dwindling supply and think we'll run out by this Thursday or Friday!

What does this mean for you? Well, we'll still have plenty of free paper bags (ours are 100% recycled content), cardboard boxes, plastic bags for bulk items, produce, meat and seafood - but otherwise, single-use plastic bags will be in the rear-view mirror.

We'll continue to give a nickel back for every bag of your own you reuse and keep sourcing new eco-friendly, options for our customers. In fact, this canvas bag pictured below on Jimmy's shoulder is just $7.99 and the profits generate micro-loans to other women-owned businesses! Not only are they sturdy and durable but they're also a great way to show off your co-op pride!

Oh, and about that nickel... While it doesn't seem like much, we give back an average of 5,000 bag refunds PER WEEK to folks that use their own reusable bags and bulk containers which amounts to about $1,000 PER MONTH!!! The nickels can be taken off your total or donated to our monthly Community Action Group! Either way, it all adds up and we all win!

This week's One Big Thing

WHEATSVILLE’S ONE BIG THING

Every week, Wheatsville staff picks the product we’re most excited about right now!

This week’s One Big Thing is Starter Plants! Here’s why we love them:

1.There are few greater joys than growing your own food!

2. Now is the perfect time to start planting in Austin!

3. Starters are sturdy and give your organic garden a good foundation!

Fresh Picks

While citrus season has hit its peak, it’s not yet on the decline. Our Fresh Picks this week are Organic Page Mandarins and Texas-Grown Organic Valencia Oranges from Strohmeyer Family Farm in McAllen.  Both are great, late-season citrus choices and are really worth snapping up while the getting’s still good.

Page Mandarins are a Clementine/Minneola hybrid with some of the best characteristics of both.  Don’t be deceived by the firmness of the fruit – inside lies a flavor-packed, juicy sweet flesh that’s one of the best of the season.

Our Valencias are Texas-Grown and super sweet! Strohmeyer Family Farm grows some super citrus.  Valencia oranges are a great late-season orange that is available nearly all-year round but late winter/early spring is the best time to eat them.

Speaking of spring, our first deliveries of organic starter plants from Gabriel Valley Farms in Georgetown and  Poteet Strawberries from Oak Hill Farms are scheduled for delivery later this week! Come by the co-op and see what’s new!

This good-for-you vegan and raw shredded salad boasts powerhouse ingredients like kale, spinach, carrots, walnuts and pumpkin seeds tossed in a dressing of olive oil, lemon juice, mint, oregano, garlic and jalapenos! Seafood Season

One of the things I really like about seafood is the variety of different textures and flavors that it brings to the culinary world. Not only is seafood a great low fat protein that is high in essential amino acids but the many variations of seafood brings a lot of options to a meal.

Wheatsville has some great seafood options for Lent or just for great eating. We have Pacific Dover Sole from Trollerpoint. This is a small flat fish filet that is mild in flavor and cooks quickly. The Amberjack is a large, wild caught fish from the reefs off the Florida coast. It is meaty like Tuna but a little milder in flavor and more flaky.

The main thing to remember when cooking fish is to not overcook it.  With the softer flesh fish like Salmon, and Sole and Cod, cook until it starts to flake easily with a fork. This helps maintain moisture and that silky texture that properly cooked fish brings to a meal.

Valentine’s Chocolate Clearance: Come and Get it!
Valentine’s Day was really special last week here at the co-op. Lots of love went towards our local chocolatiers and pasta makers. Shoppers were overflowing with enthusiasm about the Chocolove chocolate bar sale and Sjaak’s Fair-Trade Organic truffles were a beloved favorite.

Thank you for choosing Wheatsville to supply you with treats for your sweet. And the love keeps on going: until it’s gone, there’s a full basket of marked-down chocolates and other sweets that are just as delicious as they were on Valentine’s Day (and the bargain makes them taste better!) Enjoy!
