LA YOGA - JUNE 2012

Tuesday, June 5 is the date of the Presidential Primary in California. Before you think you’re just not interested, or it’s already been decided, or you’re not political, well, remember that in every election there’s more on the ballot than the big-ticket items that receive the most press. This election also offers the opportunity to begin the process of choosing some of our local representatives and to weigh in on different ballot measures.

Around the world, people fight for the privilege to be able to vote, and even here in the US, our ability to vote (if you weren’t a land-owning white man) was hard-won. Every time we take the opportunity to use our voice, it is a meaningful opportunity to participate. So, remember to visit your polling place on June 5. While the Secretary of State’s elections website won’t necessarily tell us everything we need to know, there are a number of helpful links, bits of information and a page for voting hotline phone numbers. So…hope to see you at your polling place on Tuesday.

And if you want more information about voting initiatives, in the Yoga community, Off the Mat into the World and Wanderlust are both supporting YOGAVOTES, encouraging people to participate.
On another note, the third annual Hemp History Week begins June 4. This plant is far more than something needing a prescription. Hemp is a hearty weed whose fiber makes sustainable clothing and whose seeds provide a rich source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. My favorite use of hemp seeds lately is to mix with quinoa pilaf to add a nutty crunch and extra nutrition. What’s your favorite hemp recipe?

Remember to vote on Tuesday,

Learn some facts about this potentially serious disorder and both western/eastern perspectives on dealing with it effectively in this workshop with Guy Gabriel (pictured left) at the Sivananda Center in Marina Del Rey.
