LA YOGA - JUNE 2012

Do you ever experience those times where a battery just dies at the not-most-opportune of moments? I'm always trying to think about keeping electronic devices charged, but even still, right before receiving an important phone call, or on the road without navigation system, the battery dies, and I'll have to call someone back later or rely on my memory to determine the best exit to disembark off of the freeway.

This is a metaphor for our lives-and a reason why we practice. We ask a lot of ourselves, more, in fact, than we ask of our electronic gadgets that seem to be in constant use. And just as we must remember to always carry an extra

battery, a power cord, or a car adaptor, we need to also remember to plug ourselves in regularly. We can go from fully charged to empty so quickly-more rapidly than we sometimes realize, especially as there is a fine line between the red zone and the moment when everything goes dark. As we're living the longest day of the year, we need to keep our lights burning bright by rejuvenating ourselves.

Practice is a practice for this reason. It's a regular activity that requires our attention, but one with rewards far exceeding the investment of time. So in those moments we notice ourselves drifting into the red zone, the antidote is to pause and breathe and practice.

If you're looking for a space to practice today, Exhale Spa in Venice is celebrating the SOULstice with a variety of free classes, tag team Yoga tonight and more. Turn off your computer, and head over to the beach-now.

And if you need to recharge via your backyard barbecue, try this week's Recipe for a delicious veggie burger, perfect for a summer evening.

With Love and Gratitude,
