Hello Wheatsville friends and fans!

Even though it’s so dang hot, we think you all are REALLY COOL! I’d also hazard a guess that YOU think Wheatsville and other food co-ops are cool, too. But have you ever wanted some data to back up your love of food co-ops? Well, now we have it! A study conducted for the National Co-op Grocers Association demonstrates all the ways that food co-ops make the world a better place when we thrive!

Check it out here and spread the news far and wide! We’d like this information to become as widely known as the Austin Independent Business/ Bookpeople/ Waterloo records study about the benefits of local business.

While we're on the subject of coolness. We'd also like to mention our recent win in the Austin 360.com "Your A-List" poll for the, drum roll please, Best Grocery Store in Austin. How cool is that? Of course we know we couldn't do it without all you love and support. So thank you, thank you, thank you!

This week's One Big Thing

WHEATSVILLE’S ONE BIG THING

Every week, Wheatsville staff picks the product we’re most excited about right now!

This week we're in love with Dos Lunas Artisan Cheese. What do we like about IT?

  • Dos Lunas is a specially aged raw cow’s milk cheese.
  • The milk comes from grass-fed, free-roaming cows in Schulenburg, Texas.
  • It's a farmers' market favorite that we can have at Wheatsville every day!

Keepin' it Raw

Summertime, and the living is easy! Thankfully we have only been hit with 17 three-digit temperature days so far this summer. Compared to last year, it’s downright balmy out! Still, when the mercury rises, the last thing you want to do is switch on the oven and make yourself a nice pot roast. Eating raw is the way to go in hot weather.

We love our organic white sweet corn and it’s just as good (maybe better!) eaten raw as when cooked! Straight off the cob, cut into little “corn cookies,” shaved off into a cool avocado-mango salsa, there’s plenty of applications and they’re all tasty!

While you can certainly try to eat our Organic Hairston Creek Okra raw (we did – didn’t like it), we feel this stuff is best cooked. Pan frying or sautéing is less trouble and will keep your house cooler than putting it into a lasagna (Amie’s favorite method), the okra crop is booming and now is the time to eat it!  Frozen or canned stuff just isn’t the same.

Bountiful Boxed Lunches to Grab’n’Go at the Deli!

C’mon in and grab a quick lunch to go – loaded with a sandwich, veggies and cashew-tamari dip, and a fresh-baked cashew butter cookie, these boxed lunches are the easiest way to get a full meal in no time at all! Choose from the classic PB&J, featuring organic peanut butter and organic strawberry jam spread on organic Rudi’s wheat bread, Very Veggie, featuring a salad’s worth of veggies on local ciabatta, or our hearty Italian which will fill you up, piled high with two kinds of salami, honey maple ham and provolone on local ciabatta!

The Meat of the Matter

Wheatsville has a new steak. The Tri-Tip @14.99/lb is very popular in California, but there is no reason for this great cut to not be popular here in Texas. A sirloin cut, the Tri-Tip is cut into primarily medallion style steaks that look similar to Tenderloin. Packed with the sirloins flavor this steak is great for grilling or wrapping with bacon. Just sear the steak on both sides in a hot pan with generous salt and throw that pan in a 425 degree oven (if your pan is oven safe) for about 5-7 minutes per side. While you are letting it rest for at least five minutes, deglaze the pan with stock or wine and let it reduce to your desired consistency and you have a great sauce to accompany your fantastic steak.

School starts soon and it can be a stressful time.Look to Wheatsville to help out with those quick and easy meals. Niman Ranch entrees, Pulled Pork, Beef Pot Roast in Pomodoro Sauce and Beef Tips in Provencal Sauce, are a low fuss solution. Pick up some tasty sides from the Deli and you have dinner made easy. That slow cooker is also an simple solution. Any of our Roast cuts are great for easy comfort food that is easy to deal with.

Don’t forget to try out our new Oregon Tilth Certified Organic Free Range Chicken @$4.99/lb. It's another great way to feed the family with an entrée that you barely touch while cooking.

We have plenty of Quick to fix items that are easy meal solutions. The Teriyaki Hanger Steak is an awesome protein addition to a salad. The Garlic Herb Marinated Chicken is also great for salads. Turkey Burgers are a healthy way to enjoy burgers and the Premium Burger Patties are just plain great. In a pinch, the Premium Burger Blend is a pretty fantastic substitute for veal. All of our Made In House Sausages are perfect for additions to sauces or by themselves.

We also have Apple Gate Farms and Organic Prairie sliced lunch meats for those school or work sandwiches. Save some time with Wheatsville as this new school year rolls out.

Hospice Austin

For over 30 years, Hospice Austin, our current Community Action Group has provided compassionate end-of-life care to patients and their loved ones in Austin and its surrounding counties. While we are hard at work collecting Food Pantry Donations and customer contributions, Hospice Austin is taking advantage of the beautiful natural resources our Texas Hill Country has to offer by hosting Camp Brave Heart, a recreational summer camp for children and teenagers age 6 through 17 who are grieving the loss of a loved one.

Typically, kids who are grieving experience a sense of isolation as they struggle with profound and often confusing feelings. At Camp Brave Heart, campers discover that being with others their own age who have had similar experiences is a comfortable setting for exploring emotions. Activities include swimming, hiking, campfires, hayrides, sing-alongs, crafts, a low-level ropes course, and counselor-lead grief support. For more information regarding Hospice Austin’s Camp Brave Heart and grief support services, visit their website or call (512) 342-4700.

One percent of August’s Wednesday sales (1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd) will be donated to Hospice Austin as well as additional contributions and reusable bag credits that shoppers donate at the cash register. While you are here, feel free to pick up an extra can of soup or box of oatmeal to donate to the Hospice Austin Food Pantry Drive. See you on Community Action Wednesday!

I hope you have a most excellent week!
