Hello Wheatsville friends and fans!
This week it's all about Dad! Father's Day is Sunday, June 17th and we've got all of Dad's favorite foods plus lots of beautiful, hand-made local cards and gifts. Make sure you give Dad a pat on the back, a big hug and a good meal. Slow down, tell stories, share pictures, spend time and enjoy some good food together. Local peaches, nectarines and melons have all been delicious this summer and go great with all kinds of BBQ. From humanely raised Niman Ranch Steaks to Field Roast Grain Meat Sausages, it's time to fire up the grill and make Dad a meal he won't soon forget.
And speaking of good food, we wanted to let you know that Senator Jon Tester will soon introduce a Farm Bill amendment that aims to improve seed and breed choices for American farmers, strengthen U.S. agriculture, and bolster food security. To lend your support for the Farm Bill amendment we encourage you to call Sen.Kay Bailey Hutchison(R-TX)(202) 224-5922 & Sen.John Coryn(R-TX) (202) 224-2934 today. Ask them to support Senator Tester’s Farm Bill amendment to enhance farmer access to improved seeds and breeds.A quick call from many people can make a BIG difference!

Sweet Summer
So many incredible fruits and vegetables are available to us this time of year. Our friends at Buena Tierra Farm brought us our first organic Galia and Crenshaw melons and our Heirloom Tomatoes are back. Prices on summer berries are low this time of year and flavor is superb. Pluots have arrived and plums are close behind. We’ve finally got organic grapes again. Peaches, nectarines, and apricots are here. Cucumbers, bell peppers, green beans, and basil! So much good stuff in one place!
This week our Produce Picks are two of my personal favorites. First of all, we’ve got an abundance of locally grown, organic summer squash. Come check out Patty Pan and Lebanese Squash from Tecolote farms, Sunburst and Zucchini from Johnson’s Backyard Garden, and Zucchini from Buena Tierra Farms. Three of our favorite farms in one place! Our chief Produce Picker, Emily has a recipe for a raw summer squash salad that we’ll be sampling in-store this weekend. Come by and try it out!
Organic Red Cherries are a seasonal favorite and we’ve got some incredibly sweet, juicy, perfectly ripened cherries here at Wheatsville. At $4.99 per pound, they’re reasonably priced and some of the best cherries you’ve ever eaten. Guaranteed.
Swing by and see what other incredible treats have just arrived. Welcome, summer!

Frosted Rainbows
Our Bakery’s new Community Action Cookies for June, Rainbow Cookies to celebrate OutYouth, are a hit! This great idea came from a Deli staff member who recognized the hidden potential in our buttery, hand-decorated sugar cut-out cookies and suggested we bake a different shape each month to raise awareness for our Community Action Wednesday donation recipients throughout the year! Keep an eye on our bakery case for these colorful cookies – and look for four-packs to go on the bakery table, soon!

Grilling with Dad
Wheatsville is proud to offer a new local Lamb from Valley Spring Texas certified by the American Grassfed Association. The Black Headed Dorper is a stout heritage breed that has adapted to our Texas climate. This small farm is owned and operated by Katherine Bonner and the love and care she puts into raising these animals is palpable when you meet her. Raising these amazing animals is only one aspect the many facets of her busy life, and we look forward to being able to work with her more as Wheatsville moves forward to a second store and on. We are currently offering Ground Lamb and Lamb Stew Meat in the Freezer. Give it a try - you'll be supporting a hard working woman who is dedicated, on so many levels, to her farm, the animals she raises and to the people she is trying to feed.
Sunday, June 17th is Fathers Day. The Wheatsville Meat department has plenty of great opportunities to bring a smile to Dad's face. Try out the house made Wheatsville Bratwurst. We suggest poaching them in beer and finishing them on the grill. Eat them like a hot dog with sauerkraut.
If the father you are trying to impress loves a good steak then grab him a sustainable, humanely raised Niman Ranch Hanger, Ribeye or NY Strip Steak. Great on the grill!
If he’s a fish man, then treat him to our seasonal Copper River Sockeye Salmon. This is crème de la crème of the Salmon world. This Alaskan river is the hardest river for a Salmon to climb and it makes these sockeye the best of the season.
And the newest fish in our sustainable seafood case is Dover Sole from Trollerpoint Fishery. Dover Sole is a flat fish and a member of the flounder family. It's a Pacific sole that shares its name with an English counterpart. Prepare this fish the same as you would Flounder or Halibut. Great on the grill or rolled into a pinwheel, this fish is versatile and tastes great!

New at Wheatsville
The requests kept flooding in for a greater variety of Greek and specialty yogurts, and this week we just about doubled the available selection! New brands, flavors, sizes, and yes... organics, too.
Here's a rundown of our new offerings at Wheatsville this week.
OutYouth
Wear your pride for Out Youth, June’s Community Action Group! Throughout the month, our Front End Clerks will be offering beaded bracelets – hand-made by Wheatsville Staff Members – to all shoppers who donate $1 or more to Out Youth at the cash register. These bracelets were a huge hit last summer and they were in such demand that we just had to bring them back. Each one is unique and they are loved by children and adults alike. Get one while supplies last.
In addition to the bracelet proceeds, Out Youth will receive 1% of June’s Wednesday sales and all contributions and reusable bag credits donated by shoppers at the cash register during the month. While you are shopping on Community Action Wednesday, stop by the bakery and pick up a hand-decorated Out Youth rainbow sugar cookie for $1.25 each. For the first week of June, Out Youth generated nearly $1,000 in donations and we are excited to see the enthusiasm and support carry through to the end of the month!
If you have any questions about Out Youth’s programs, or would like to meet with one of Out Youth’s staff members about your LGBTQIA youth, please contact them at 512-419-1233 or stop by their Drop-In Center. Thanks for your support and we look forward to seeing you on Community Action Wednesday.
I hope you have a most excellent week!
